We make a checklist, we go through and check off the checklist and repeat. It worked yesterday so it must work today. And our very favorite on campus, this is the way we’ve always done it. How do we get out of this rat race? Double Loop Learning.
What do you do:
When you’ve finished a project or a task, ask yourself 2 things:
- Did we do what we said we were going to do? This is a pretty common question. This is how we check off our list.
- Should we keep doing it this way? This is the 2nd loop of Double Loop learning.
When to use it:
- At the end of a task or project
Why does it work:
First, it gives us time to pause and reflect. Sometimes the answer to the 2nd question is yes, and if so, that’s great! But asking the question gives you the opportunity to explore whether or not we can do something better.
Second, by practicing this, you’re creating a learning environment for you.
