The Future of Work
Why should you consider how your skills crossover to other employment sectors? Increasing automation, constant change, and economic uncertainty – that’s why. The future of work requires increasing adaptability, flexibility, and the application of a wide range of highly developed skills to ever- changing projects and (potential) future employers.
Here’s a few prompts to help you get started…(involve others in this reflective and action-oriented process).
Make a list of three things you’re good at and enjoy doing. Describe the most exciting project or activity you’ve been involved with recently (personal or professional). List three of your core values and how they relate to (or are expressed in) these activities.
What “ninja skills” are involved in these activities?
How could you continue to professionally develop these skills? Classes? Mentoring? New projects?
What jobs use these skills? (You may have to do some research or conduct a few informational interviews to find out).
Transfer these skills to a sector map (look for skills that cross your current and at least one other related sector) Job Sectors Overview
List three projects to which you can apply (and expand use of) your ninja skills (without concern for whether these projects “fit” neatly with your current responsibilities. Especially cool is you can blend personal and work related projects to develop these skills). Begin to build a professional portfolio that show cases these special abilities and consider adapting your resume to focus on these high-level “portable” skills as a vehicle for skillful, “adaptable” career development and advancement.
