When asked to write a piece for this amazing blog- Keeping up with the Admins, I tried to think of something helpful and revealing for managers and supervisors to read. I wanted it to be something that could be inspiring. But this post will be none of those things. The main take away from this post is simple. Are you ready for it?
Help me to Help you! What exactly does that mean??? It means I can only be as effective as you let me. A balance between over communication and a positive relationship will build a long lasting and helpful work relationship for both you and your admin. We are, in a sense, a sort of magical being making so many things run smoothly for your day and for the teams we may support. However, true success comes from two-way communication with you. I can only be as helpful as you allow me to be. So what does that look like? Well, I can only speak for me, but if I could share three things that help in my admin life they would be these:
- Clear expectations: Sure there may be times when the rules change, however, burnout will happen quite quickly if you keep changing up the rules of the game. Being detailed about the task at hand helps me to process your request quickly and with minimal errors.
- Wiggle room: If the task isn’t very structured, allow me to be creative in doing it. This will help me to grow in skill and also will give me a piece of ownership.
- The benefit of the doubt: There are some things past my point of control. Please remember that I’m doing the all that I can to get your request completed in a timely manner.
Putting yourself in your admin’s shoes can help build a strong bond and that’s a win-win for everyone!
