Welcome to the Wisdom Café! I am delighted to be launching this new learning site for Berkeley staff to learn from and with each other. As a learning professional for the past 27 years, I have watched many changes happen in how people and organizations learn, but never before with the speed and significance that is happening today.
Learning has gone from a passive activity, attending a class where the “sage on the stage” imparts what they think you need to know and you listen, or you reading a book or article on your own, or your manager telling you how to do your job, to a highly active process. Now people start communities of practice to find other people who share their interests and can help them learn, or book groups, or they look up answers for themselves on Google or YouTube.
Technology and social media have led to a democratization of learning and education that is unprecedented. Learning is everyone’s domain. Continuous learning and growth are not only possible, but expected. Curiosity is the only currency you need.
Workplace learning must adapt to this new world and provide the tools and vehicles to leverage the collective wisdom in the organization. We all must build learning and professional networks that cross organizational boundaries and even go beyond organizations. We must support collaborative learning and work. We must discover and share best practices and ideas and solutions.
My role is to curate content, to build platforms, to encourage peer learning, to share information. There will always be a place for face-to-face classes and online learning, and now we expand the repertoire – to a community-based learning site, the Wisdom Café. Explore, comment, write, share content, contribute resources – this is your place!
